This info-graphic shows a few of the significant contributions from women in various space programs.

There have been several significant women who have made important contributions to space exploration and science. Here are some notable women in space:

  1. Valentina Tereshkova: Valentina Tereshkova, a Soviet cosmonaut, became the first woman to travel to space on June 16, 1963, aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft. She orbited the Earth 48 times during her historic mission.
  2. Sally Ride: Sally Ride was the first American woman in space. She flew on the Space Shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983, and became a symbol of women’s achievements in science and space exploration.
  3. Mae Jemison: Mae Jemison was the first African American woman in space. She flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in September 1992 as a mission specialist.
  4. Eileen Collins: Eileen Collins was the first female Space Shuttle pilot and the first female Space Shuttle commander. She commanded the Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-93 in 1999 and the Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-114 in 2005.
  5. Peggy Whitson: Peggy Whitson is a retired NASA astronaut and biochemist who holds the record for the longest cumulative time spent in space by an American astronaut. She spent 665 days in space over three missions.
  6. Shannon Lucid: Shannon Lucid is another accomplished NASA astronaut who participated in five Space Shuttle missions and one extended stay on the Russian space station Mir, where she became the first American woman to live aboard a space station.
  7. Kalpana Chawla: Kalpana Chawla, an Indian-born American astronaut, was tragically lost in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. She is remembered for her contributions to space science and her dedication to space exploration.
  8. Samantha Cristoforetti: Samantha Cristoforetti is an Italian astronaut who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman from any space agency. She spent 199 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2014-2015.
  9. Christina Koch and Jessica Meir: These NASA astronauts made history in October 2019 when they conducted the first all-female spacewalk outside the ISS.

These women have made significant contributions to space exploration, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations of scientists and astronauts. Their achievements have helped pave the way for greater diversity and inclusion in the field of space science and technology.
